Whiplash: Watch Low Speed Impact

Low Speed Impacts Proven To Cause Whiplash Injury

It is a common misconception that low speed rear end collisions do not cause injury to the neck. Research since the mid 1990’s has demonstrated that the rear impact causes the vehicle to accelerate forward, moving the hips and upper body to move forward UNDER THE HEAD until the forward moving head rest strikes the back of the head, causing a rebounding forward. This mechanism causes a shearing affect and injury in the discs and joints of the mid cervical spine.
Other Facts:
  • A 4 MPH impact produces 5G’s of force in the occupants neck. This the same amount a fighter pilot experiences.
  • A 2 MPH increase, to 6 MPH, produces 9G’s of force: almost double. Thus a minor increase in speed significantly increases the force impacting the occupants neck.
