Being involved in a car accident can be very traumatic, both emotionally and physically. There are a number of injuries that you can suffer. Depending upon the details of the impact, any part of your body can be injured, even multiple injuries are common.

Some of the more common injuries noted in a car accident includes: neck injuries, brain and head injuries, back injuries, face injuries and psychological injuries.

Neck Injuries – Mention car accident and most people immediately think of the term whiplash. While not truly an injury itself, most people associate the term with some type of injury to the neck. This is probably the most common injury you may experience in low to moderate impact car accidents. During a collision, the neck can be moved in a rapid and forceful way, injuring the ligaments, muscles and disc. Injury to these structures can cause many different symptoms including: neck pain or stiffness, headaches or pain down the arm.

Head Injuries – Many car accident victims sustain injuries to the brain, referred to as a concussion or mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Unfortunately, if they do not report striking their head or losing consciousness, this injury is often over looked. A MTBI can result from a forceful shaking of a person’s head during a car accident. This results in injury and inflammation to the brain and resulting symptoms of headache, dizziness, loss of concentration or ability to focus and a host of other vague and worrisome symptoms.

Back Injuries – One of the less thought of injuries sustained in a car accident is injury to the low back. Depending upon the body type of the victim, the seat structure and their position prior to impact, the low back can be injured causing disc issues, strain/sprains or even fracture.

Face Injuries – Next to neck injuries, this can be one of the more common injuries from a car accident. The force of the impact causes the face to strike the steering wheel, dashboard, sun visor, or the door resulting in cuts or fractures to the face. In some cases, broken glass is the cause of the facial injury.

Psychological Injuries – Not only can a victim of a car accident suffer physical injury, but they may experience psychological injuries as well. For some, they find themselves apprehensive or anxious when driving or riding in a car. Others suffer nightmares.  Some can even exhibit symptoms similar to PTSD.
