Beat Pregnancy Back Pain!
75% of women experienced relief with chiropractic care!
Along with the joys of expecting a child, many women also dread the physical discomforts that are associated with pregnancy. One of the most common is back pain! Yet while back pain in pregnancy is frequent, in most cases it doesn’t have to be so bad.
It is reported that over 50% of women experience back pain while they are pregnant. Yet only 21% consult a healthcare provider for relief. Unfortunately, there is a mindset that nothing can really be done to relieve this back pain while pregnant. That is far from the truth!
Research has also shown that over 75% of women who sought chiropractic care for their pregnancy back pain experienced relief!
The Causes of Pregnancy Back Pain
When a women is pregnant, there are several changes that occur to create a healthy environment for the baby and for delivery. Many of these changes can result in misaligned joints of the pelvis and lower back, they include:
- the extended stomach increasing the arch of the low back, jamming on the spinal joints
- the bones of the pelvis can rotate or flare and increase stress and tension on the sacro-iliac (SI) joints.
- the postural changes can result in further stress and irritation of spinal joints in the mid-back and neck areas.
Maintaining the best alignment and mobility of these joints reduces the irritation and decreases the back pain.
Another major factor of low back pain during pregnancy is ligament stretching or laxity. As the mother to be approaches her delivery date, her body begins to release a hormone known as relaxin. The purpose of relaxin is much like it’s name states: to relax various ligaments and muscles of the pelvis, allowing it to expand as the baby passes through the birth canal. As relaxin floods the body, the joints become more limber, but unsteady. This increases the likelihood of the pelvic joints becoming misaligned and irritated resulting in lower back or hip pain.
Yet another issue with relaxin is after delivery and the body’s absorption of the hormone. As the hormone is absorbed, the once loose ligaments begin to tighten up to normal strength. If the joints of the pelvis or low back misaligned due to the laxity, as the ligaments tighten, they result in the joints being held in a misaligned position. Thus creating joint stress and pain. It is quiet common for our female patients to comment: “I never had back pain until I had my baby!”
